MISSION

Most people living in cities want to contribute to a sustainable future, but face a practical barrier. I asked them:

  • Do you believe in building a sustainable future?

  • What steps do you currently take to ensure sustainability?

  • Would it be possible for you to set up solar panels at your home?

For most, the answer was not favourable. But what if there was a way around that?

  • What if you could get all the benefits of solar panels without having to set them up yourself?

  • What if those panels not only powered a sustainable future, but also gave you consistent monthly returns?

  • What if your capital could grow while shaping a better future for everyone?

PROBLEM

Sustainability today feels inaccessible, vague, and performative. Greenwashing has left people skeptical, unsure of which initiatives to trust and where their money actually goes. While awareness of climate change is higher than ever, the pathways to create real, credible and systematic impact remain unclear.

User Persona

Meet Aarav, a 28-year-old urban professional. He’s financially stable, already has a portfolio of traditional investments, but feels that his money could be doing more for the world. Aarav represents a group of investors who want both returns and purpose, but find themselves caught in a system that doesn’t provide it.

Pain Points

  • Lack of alternate investment options

  • Scepticism from greenwashing

  • Lack of transparency and tangibility

JOURNEY

Konark was never just a concept, it had to be feasible, trustworthy, and scalable. I started with research to understand both the economic feasibility of solar energy and the psychology of modern investors.

Business Development & Product Discovery

Konark was built around a simple but powerful value proposition: “Good returns plus real impact, money that doesn’t just grow but also creates change”

The model had 3 major goals:

  • Deliver consistent monthly payouts.

  • Open access to clean energy investments, even for those without property ownership.

  • Offer higher returns than fixed deposits or savings accounts

ECONOMICS

The early financial model tested viability at scale. For a 10MW solar farm, CAPEX was estimated at ₹46 Cr, with yearly OPEX of ₹4.65 Cr. Energy sales plus carbon credits generated annual revenue of ~₹11.2 Cr, delivering strong returns for investors.

In real terms, an individual investor saw an annual ROI of ~13%. This model was economically sound.

Our revenue streams were diversified:

  • Flat cut on profits ensuring alignment with investors.

  • Carbon credit monetisation through India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme.

  • Corporate PPAs with large firms sourcing renewable energy to meet ESG goals.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

From the beginning, design played a central role in shaping Konark. The philosophies were clear:

  1. Emotion drives momentum

  2. Break the status-quo aesthetic, humanly

  3. Build trust at a glance

By uniting finance and warmth, Konark created a system where investors not only see their returns, but also feel their impact. The result: a brand and product designed to invoke feelings of trustworthiness, warmth and accessibility, while at the same time being emotionally, ethically and financially rewarding.

REFLECTION

Undertaking this project taught me that clarity is more valuable than perfection. Early on, I found myself procrastinating, overthinking, and stuck in analysis paralysis while chasing the “perfect” identity. What helped me break through was realising that restrictions and deadlines fuel creativity. By setting boundaries and committing to a plan, I was able to move forward, experiment, and refine with purpose.

I also saw the power of emotional design, people invest in meaning, not just numbers. This project reaffirmed my philosophy: design is a tool to solve problems, make change, and inspire action.

Konark was my approach on systematically taking on some of the most important problems we are currently facing, it is a blueprint for how finance can serve both people and the planet. By making sustainability credible, accessible, and rewarding, it opens the door for a future where every investor can be part of collective change.

Imagine if every rupee you invested didn’t just grow, but helped the world grow with it. That’s the promise of Konark.
